In recent times we have been reading a variety of interesting articles on multiple websites claiming to discuss and educate re native spirituality and religion. Some have actually been pretty good. At some point in the near future, we intend adding some links to make it easier for people to go and explore some of the other amazing resources that keep the spirit and culture of the native living and breathing.
Unfortunately for every site that tells the stories that the elders told, there are also sites that misinterpret our beliefs and attempt to transpose them into alternative viewpoints. One site I found seemed quite good, until the terms shaman and witch were used in reference and an image pointing to the Nunnehi, had them in spacesuits and what appeared to be a mothership behind them.
We try to make sure that the information we offer lines up and has ties back to the stories passed down from generation to generation so that confusion and falsehood may not be introduced, where possible including the names of elders whom the stories and legends were shared from. These sites, which often are highly respectable in appearance tell their viewpoint without any mention of sources etc.
While we support the sharing of knowledge in as wide a field as possible, it is saddening that there is such a broadening field of misinformation. We do not know whether this is a deliberate attempt to corrupt the ancient stories or whether there has simply been a complete misinterpretation of the stories which we as indigenous hold dear to our hearts and spirits.
We encourage all to read as much as they can, and to never be afraid to double check what they read. But just be aware that not all we read is accurate and there are so many use this wonderful medium to transmit information that is stepping away from the path on which the ancestors, so long ago guided our feet and our journey to travel. The creator will guide those whose hearts are true to the paths of the ancestors, we must just allow ourselves to maintain the integrity of our culture and history.
