Remember But Forgive By: Debbie Carver

Remember but Forgive
He was here so big and strong,
On the mountain where he called home.
He looked over the valleys and the trees,
Across deserts and shimmering seas.
High atop and far below,
The Spirits from so long ago.
Red man they called us then,
Made us learn the ways of the white man.
We wanted to hunt, love and roam.
This land was our happy home.
But out of malice and greed
They burned our homes and scattered our seed.
"You must leave this land!" they said.
"Get up from your nice warm bed!"
"Take only what you can hold."
"Your kids, your animals and your old."
"We are giving you some nice new land."
"Someplace where the hunting is grand."
"Don't worry about what you leave behind."
"You want need it, you won't mind."
We had no choice but do as told.
Soldiers were coming, lo and behold!
Many died along the way.
The hungry, the sick was pushed anyway.
The trail was long, hot then cold.
We lost most of our young and old.
Dreams and hopes were lost everyday,
By many who walked all the way.
Thousands walked across this land.
Depending on eachother for a helping hand.
"Push on!" the soldiers said.
"We want to get home, back to our bed."
We were raped, starved and beaten.
Many days our young haven't eaten.
How could they be so cruel, so mean?
Taking our lives, our women and teens.
All we have left now is our pride.
We will make it, we will survive!
We will rise, we will be strong!
We will make a happy home!
We have to forgive, have to move on!
We will make a home of our own!
So to our brothers of all race and creed,
We must live together, sow our seed.
We once was made to leave our land.
Slaves were made to use their hands.
To work, to sweat and plant the seed.
All to fulfil a greater need.
We all worked in different ways,
To make this country what it is today!
We must stand today, hand in hand.
Respect each other,respect the land.
Remember how we got here, remember the tears.
Remember the hopes, remember the fears.
He was here so big and strong,
On the mountain where he called home.
He looked over the valleys and trees.
Across deserts and shimmering seas.
High atop and far below.
The Spirits from so long ago.
