Coffee is now considered as one of the necessaries of life. But with the prices sky rocketing with all groceries
Substitutes have proven a way of getting around most things to survive.. Here is one for our most precious of necessaries... Potato Coffee (And it does taste, smell and even the color is similar) Believe it or not!
Wash raw potatoes clean, cut them into small pieces about the size of a hazel nut; put them in a broad dish or pan; set them in a hot oven about 350 degrees. Stir them frequently to prevent them from sticking together.
When perfectly dry, put them into a dry bag or box.
When used, they must be roasted the same as coffee beans and then ground to preference for your modern coffee maker. Or) if truly holding to the older tradition.. On an open campfire or coal and wood stove, boil pieces (If not ground) about 2-3 Tablespoons depending on how strong you drink your coffee normally.. Adjust forward or back to taste. If ground use normal amounts as regular use, once again to taste and strength.
Sweet Potatoes were also used, wash them and also diced very small, spread thin in bread pans and slowly brown them till real dark almost burned in an old wood stove or oven.
Ground them up just like beans... use to regular coffee strength
