NOTE: If you do not already know the story.. These were made to not only last for an extended time if mailed to a solider in a tin container, but to also provide some needed nourishment along one's trail through the bush country here in Australia.
Another small note with the differences in languages, most of the time we do call our "cookies".. biscuits.
Western Starr Woman
1 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup coconut
125 grams butter
2 Tablespoons Golden Syrup
1 Tablespoon water
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
Sift the flour into a bowl. Add the sugar, rolled oats and coconut.
Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the golden syrup and water
stir in the bicarbonate of soda into the liquid mixture.
Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Place walnut-size balls of mixture on a greased tray and bake at 175oC (Aussie Temp) 325-350 (American Tempt) for 15-20 minutes.
Biscuits will harden when cool.
For more crunchier biscuits, use more golden syrup.
